How will you spend your energy?

There is a beautiful word in Sanskrit that means the conscious flow of attention – Soma.
It’s the idea that whatever you put your attention on… will grow.
To better understand this idea I’ll share with you and experiment that I did at home.
At the beginning of Spring, my children and I planted a few vegetables and fruits seeds. Despite not being very excited about this sowing exercise, they did it.
Then off to convincing them to spend a little bit of time every day watering the soil. One of my children asked “Is it not easier to put plenty of water at once so we don’t need to do it for the rest of the week?”
I patiently explained that it does not work this way and that we get much better results spending a little bit of time on it every day. Because by doing so we can tend to their daily needs that are somehow different from day to day - how dry the soil is, if there are any bugs around it, too much sun or rain and so on.
For the few months that followed, it was a bit of a hit and miss until the children saw the first courgette sprouting! They immediately started tendering for it on a daily basis till harvest time.
The children harvested a huge courgette and were in awe at it. By now they have harvested many other fruits and vegetables and do not need any prompting from me.
This example explains well the concept of Soma. When you focus your energy, time and efforts into something or someone; this something/someone will grow. There is no doubt about that.
The other lesson we learned is that a little bit every day is much more powerful than a lot all at once. It is the little actions, the consistency of it and the continuous flow of your attention that makes the real difference.
The Soma concept is applied everywhere, including Ayurveda.
The question is…. What are you going to put your energy on? The choice is entirely yours. Choose it wisely!
